Future of Photojournalism

I recently watched an incredible documentary about a vet. from Iraq. And it really made me think about the future of photojouralism. It isn’t just about the images telling the story anymore, it’s about the subjects themselves telling it to you.

Honing Skills: Book Selection

Every couple of months I love to hone my skills a bit. I do this in many different ways. One way is by reading books or magazines from the pro’s, but of course the best way is a combination of research and simply doing.

And this month I have decided to get Scott Kelby’s book on “The 7-Point System for Adobe Photoshop CS3“. I have been hearing a lot about this book lately and just how much it can simplify or assist in your post-pro life. Another book is by Joe McNally, which was suggested on Photoshop User TV and is called “The Moment It Clicks: Photography secrets from one of the world’s top shooters“. It takes you into the mind of Joe McNally, he shares some of his best kept secrets with the world, very highly rated book.

If any of you are reading books that have pushed you to get better at photography, please do share them in the comments. It’s always great to expand your library of wisdom from the professionals.

There’s nothing quite like creating a very ghetto studio session. This was all done use a on-camera speedlight, 8×11 paper, a lamp and a little bit of photoshop magic.

iStockPhoto Lightroom Plug-In

With the release of Lightroom 1.3 there has been a great featured added: Lightroom Export SDK. And with this has come some great much needed export plugins, one that I use all the time is Jeffrey Friedl’s Flickr Export. Since this plugin was released there have been a few others that have grabbed my attention. One that was recently was for iStockPhoto written by Eugene Berman. When I saw this my heart jumped for joy (well, just a little jump).

If you upload to iStockphoto often, then you know as well as I that their (iStockphoto’s) built in uploader is a pain in the arse. I haven’t had much time to test it out, but it’s probably worth a look: HERE.

Purpose: Does it matter?
Tuesday February 05th 2008, 9:10 pm

Shooting for/with a purpose, what does this mean to the photographer? I have been thinking about this question for a couple weeks now. Wrestling with it, and trying to understand what it means. I believe I have touched on it a bit when I was thinking about the photographer and their abilities to “create”, but I feel there is more to this.

I find myself very often getting caught up in the issue of shooting without a purpose in hand. Shooting without a purpose, is there really a reason to do it? Will anything of purpose come out of it? What about when shooting with a purpose, what do we classify as being a good purpose and/or reason?

These are some questions that I have been working on before writing this post. And to be honest, I haven’t really come to any conclusion. I feel like these questions are subject to such different opinions that the answer will change every time you ask the question. So is there a way to ask this question that brings up a more concrete answer?

No.

At this point and time I feel that there is no question that would bring up a more concrete answer. The only way that it will bring up a more concrete answer is by taking each personal opinion as their own concrete answer. Now by saying that, some will get up in arms over this. Because there has to be an ultimate statement to which we all agree on through which a real answer will be laid. And for those people I say this, are you living in a world of modernity or post-modernity? Because for myself, I cannot just lay to rest this question and sleep easy (Ok maybe I can sleep fine without knowing).

So I throw this out to you, the reader. Shooting without a purpose:

  • Is it possible
  • Will anything purposeful come out of it?
  • What classifies something as being purposeful?
  • Does it really matter?

A Snappier JordanNielsen.com!

After a couple of conversations I had with a some friends, I realized that jn.com was loading way to slowly to keep people on the site. So today I did some heavy lifting with the images. Slicing the fat by 3/4 off all of the images, which will now load very quickly on any high-speed connection.

You may also notice that the blog has undergone a few improvements as well. I sliced the fat off the images here and went back to my old format of adding portfolio links right on the main page of the blog.

I hope you enjoy the improvements and see a speedier delivery of images, because that is what it’s all about!

Update: With the update of the single column in the K2 theme the Portfolio link is now at the bottom of the page.
